Tibetan Art Originals Dhyana Zagri is highly skilled in a number of mediums, including colored pencil drawing, jewelry design, mural design and production as well as her current work, which is acrylic on canvas. Dhyana's current series of originals are based on Tibetan Thangka Art. Each work represents her interpretation of a specific Tibetan Buddhist deity, each one with its own meaning and purpose, based on this rich, ancient, cultural tradition. When asked about this body of work Dhyana said “I first encountered this culture at the Tibetan Freedom Festival held in Washington D.C. in June of 1998. I was fascinated by the beautifully intricate designs of a sand mandala being created by the monks and the fact that they would destroy it upon completion. This was done to represent the impermanence of all things. I love this art because it represents the profound wisdom of the Tibetan culture, encouraging us to live our lives with compassion for all sentient beings, and to be aware of the impermanence of this world.”
Imagery Inspired by the Art of Tibetan Buddhism -A Brief Background
The Culture of Tibet, known to many through the teachings of his holiness the Dali Lama, holds transcendent wisdom as its highest and most relevant ideal.
Tibetans create art to open windows from the ordinary, coarse world we know, into the extraordinary realm of pure wisdom and compassion. This form of art creates an opportunity for the viewer to transmute even the darkest aspects of the human experience – such as fear of death and the drives to lust and hate – into positive, creative energy that can triumph over them.
The quintessential Buddhist art, in the broadest sense, is the liberating of all beings from suffering; its fruition is the discovery of truth, beauty, goodness, and the capacity for bliss, inherent in enlightened life.
In the works presented by Dhyana Zagri, the viewer is compelled by the traditional approach of making the figure the central focus. Contrast and volume are achieved through juxtaposition of contrasting color and bold defining lines, in a unique presentation, that focuses us on specific aspects of the figure. The Artist’s intention is that those who view this work will be provided with a new appreciation for the richness and depth of the Tibetan Culture, whose very existence is currently being threatened by the Government of China, and perhaps embrace their own experience of healing as well.
